:EDIT: PLEASE don't get your mods from steam! You'll regret it, use MO and get your mods from nexus! it still requires that steam is open and you can still use the steam overlay to interact with friends or whatever. Sorry if this was unhelpful, but I'd investigate verifying your version of skyrim. I don't remember where I saw others talking about it though. It's correctly listed in the in game menu somewhere if i recall.
Or more accurately it's shortened, ie ver 1.8.5 when it's really 1.8.5.985. I remember hearing about an issue where skyrims version that's listed is different from what it really is. Now suddenly I'm getting an error message when I launch saying "Please Update To The Latest Version Of Skyrim", I just hit OK and play the game but it's annoying that it comes every time I wanna play. I followed a guide on how to launch SKSE from Steam, and it worked no problem. So I have the latest version of Skyrim, and I installed SKSE no problem.
